Of all the tasks to be carried out when transferring 78rpm discs, perhaps the most difficult and potentially contentious is that of pitching the recordings correctly.
The term ’78rpm’ is somewhat misleading because, as many readers will have found to their cost, discs in the days before LP were delightfully if frustratingly non-standardized, in both recording characteristics and speed.
The backs of many of the BHCs often include record label samples, adhered by glue. Victor usually indicated dubbed 78rpm pressings by inscribing “S/8” in the “Ret’d [date] – [number] c.p.,” which ADP editors interpret as the date a master.

Victor Master Numbering Systems
It is the second-oldest record label in American history, after sister label Columbia Records. In , the Radio Corporation of America RCA purchased the Victor Talking Machine Company , then the world’s largest manufacturer of phonographs including the famous ” Victrola ” and phonograph records in British English , “gramophone records”. The company then became RCA Victor. The format was abandoned by , and two-speed turntables were no longer offered, but some Program Transcriptions lingered in the Victor record catalog until the end of the s.

The term 78 to describe the record refers to the revolutions per minute it makes around a record player. Prior to the late s all 78 records were made from shellac and then dyed a particular color black being the most prominent but also red and green were popular. However, World War II would have a dramatic effect on the 78 records production. Shellac is a resin that comes from the lac bug. The main sources for shellac were from the Malay Peninsula and French Indochina, both under Japanese occupation by the s.
It was this occupation that caused record companies to seek alternatives to shellac such as vinyl.

Some older formats, though, run at 78 RPM. Okeh Records announces its first release from singer, trumpeter, and songwriter Bria Skonberg. While they are fine for flexible vinyl records, they are too thin to offer sufficient protection to fragile antique 78s, and all but ensure that they will break in shipping. This is the page to start with if you are looking for some general information concerning value, age or identification of your records, sheet music or phonographs. It’s also a good place for beginning collectors to get some ideas about the hobby. We have included the questions we are asked most often, and have provided fairly detailed responses. Factors such as condition, edition, and even certain variations in the label design can greatly affect the value of any record.

Some Leeds records were recorded specifically for Leeds, as can be confirmed by the spoken announcements at the beginning of the records. Hunting accused Leeds of attempting to defraud him. Leeds Talk-O-Phone, according to Hunting, made good upon being threatened with exposure.
The most notable feature of early Leeds records are the labels at the center of the discs, some of the most elaborate and beautiful ever to grace phonograph records.
